School-based Support Services

The Office of School-based Support Services understands that learning takes place in many different settings. Tennessee schools offer a wide range of early education support programs, with activities designed to promote healthy physical, mental and social development.

These include:

  • Infant/toddler care (from 6 weeks to 4 years of age) in child development labs in high schools
  • Employee childcare for children of teaching staff
  • Early intervention programs (from birth to 3 years of age)
  • Pre-kindergarten programs, including the TN Voluntary Pre-K classes and non-public school childcare
  •

For school-aged children, before and after school programs (also referred to as school-age care programs or extended school programs) should provide a mix of activities designed to promote experiential learning, development of social and emotional skills, and physical activities. These programs are not intended to simply extend the regular classroom format. Instead, they should provide an assortment of unique activities, which support and reinforce student learning.
